3600 individual members will be actively engaged and encouraged to take measurable actions to reduce their environmental impact in the areas of energy, waste and personal transport. Co-operativesUK will be working with a range of co-operative enterprises including housing, worker owned, community owned and consumer co-operatives. Through its network of member co-operatives, Co-operativesUK will reach a further 200,000 individuals with targeted information and advice on sustainable living.
Co-operativesUK will be working closely with the Plunkett Foundation www.plunkett.co.uk , the Confederation of Co-operative Housing (CCH) www.cch.coop, the UK Cohousing Network (www.cohousing.org.uk) and the National Federation of Tenant Management Organisations, (www.nftmo.com). A Greener Living Officer will be employed to work with designated ‘eco-champions’ in each co-operative and to reach individuals through a dedicated website www.greenertogether.coop
Individual members of co-operatives will pledge to undertake a maximum of nine actions under three increasingly challenging categories:
- ‘Making connections’ – understanding energy, transport and waste use
- ‘Do it yourself’ – easy actions such as sealing draughts and getting on a bike
- ‘Smart choices’ – bigger changes such as switching to a green energy supplier
Individuals will be encouraged to join with others in their co-operative to take collective action on sustainable living such as car-sharing. Promotional material, events, and competitions will encourage and support participation.
