Defra launched this fund as part of their Third Sector Strategy in November 2008 to promote greener living across England. Over £6million has been made available to develop and support projects run by national third sector delivery partners between June 2009 and March 2011.
Purpose of Funding: To secure funding, applicants had to draw up plans to show that they had the ability and reach to implement projects that would influence pro-environmental behaviours in the wider population. Applicants needed to demonstrate that they were able to influence behavioural change at a grass roots level to individuals and communities.
It was also important to make sure that the applicant knew their audience and had the potential to change behaviour. This meant finding out if the applicant had worked out realistic approaches to engage people at grass-roots level to enable them to live more sustainably.
Selection of Delivery Partners: Delivery partners were selected competitively through a two stage application process. The first stage invited interested Third Sector organisations to submit a concept note which included short explanations of how the intended programme of projects would meet the objectives of the Greener Living Fund. Defra received 112 concept notes requesting £58m in support, nearly 10 times the amount available. From this 17 organisations were short listed to develop their concept note to full project proposal, out of these 8 were selected for funding. Profiles of each project can be found by clicking on each of the squares above.
